THOMASTON, Conn. (July 14, 2026) — Maxwood Furniture recently helped bring a dream princess bedroom to life for Thomaston resident Arcenia Klein, a 6-year-old undergoing cancer treatment, through Circle of Care’s Art From the Heart program.
Designed around Arcenia’s love of princesses, castles and unicorns, the room was transformed into a personalized retreat where she can rest, play and enjoy a space created just for her. Maxwood Furniture supported the project by donating the fabric canopy and tower accessories featured in the room and providing a discount on the bed.
Maxwood became involved after one of its wholesale customers reached out on behalf of Circle of Care about the bedroom makeover.
“At Maxwood, we believe in the power of small acts to create big moments of wonder,” said Rona Szewczyk, Internal Sales Coordinator at Maxwood Furniture. “Every child deserves a place that feels like magic, and we’re honored to have played a part in bringing that dream to life.”
The makeover was led by longtime Circle of Care volunteer Amy Gonch, who has led Art From the Heart makeover teams for more than 15 years.
“It never gets old,” Gonch said. “I have been truly impressed with the resilience these children have despite facing a life-threatening illness.”
For Arcenia and her family, the transformation made an immediate difference. After exploring her new room, Arcenia decided she wanted to sleep there again rather than in her parents’ room, an important step toward restoring a sense of normalcy for the family. Her two-year-old sister also received a new toddler bed in the shared bedroom.
“She is over the moon happy. These days help her so much to get through her treatment,” Arcenia’s mother said following the reveal.
The makeover was completed by a dedicated team of volunteers, with support from Totally Home & Totally Kids Furniture and Maxwood Furniture.
Circle of Care’s Art From the Heart program creates personalized dream rooms for children and teens facing pediatric cancer, providing spaces intended to bring comfort, joy and a renewed sense of control during treatment. Since the program began, more than 190 room makeovers have been completed throughout Connecticut and neighboring communities.
For Maxwood Furniture, the project offered an opportunity to use what the company does best to help create a meaningful moment for a child and her family.
“Every child deserves a place where imagination can run wild and healing feels a little lighter,” Szewczyk said.
